Thomas Magistros

Thomas Magistros
   Philologist and teacher (died ca. 1347) from Thessalonike (q.v.) who went on an embassy to Constantinople ca. 1316 to see Andronikos II (qq.v.). The letter describing the embassy contains interesting descriptive details of the trip, quite in contrast to his dry commentaries on ancient authors like Pindar, Euripides (qq.v.), and Aristophanes. He taught Demetrios Triklinios, a teacher of grammar in Thessalonike, and a classical philologist in his own right, who edited the extant works of Sophocles, Euripides (qq.v.), and Aeschylus. Philotheos Kokkinos and Gregory Akindynos (qq.v.) were also his pupils.
